Our programs are aimed at a wide range of junior skiers, ages 5
to 19. Development program racers learn basic skiing skills, while
junior racers learn ski racing techniques and tactics while
improving their coordination and skiing ability. Training is
structured in groups according to the needs and abilities of the
individuals. Participants in the junior racing program are members
of the Labrador Mountain Ski Team.
Our Goals Are To:
- Have fun
- Develop strong skiing fundamentals
- Teach basic racing tactics of competition skiing
- Familiarize racers with the United States Ski and Snowboard (USSA)
system, rules and responsibilities
- Promote high levels of ethics and fair play in competition
- Teach the value and methods of physical training and diet
- Introduce goal setting and achievement in a positive
atmosphere
- Promote the enjoyment and personal rewards that skiing and
sports offer

Fees for the Flying Forerunner development program for the
2008-2009 season are $139 per young person - all Club fees,

USSA and NYSSRA
Memberships:
All Junior Racers must join the United States Ski and Snowboard
Association (USSA) and the New York State Ski Racing Association (NYSSRA)
if they wish to compete. Junior 4s and 5s join the USSA Youth Ski
League, while Junior 3s, 2s and 1s must have a Competitor's
License. Renewal applications are sent by USSA and NYSSRA. USSA
applications for new racers can be obtained by clicking on the
following link -
USSA Membership Application.
The NYSSRA application can be found by going to the
the NYSSRA Web
site and clicking on the Member Services page. You can also
choose to join NYSSRA or renew your membership on-line!!
Medical, Accident & Liability Insurances:
All USSA event participants (athletes, coaches and officials) are
required to have valid and sufficient medical/accident insurance
coverage for the duration of the membership year and must accept
full responsibility for provision of coverage as a condition of
participation in official training and competitions. Proof of such
insurance must be made available when necessary. The Club requires
that a Medical Information and Release form be on file with the
Club prior to the first practice.
As a benefit of membership, USSA provides all properly registered
USSA participant members with secondary participant accident
coverage, which provides insurance coverage in excess of the
participant member's primary coverage. The coverage is in place
while participating in a USSA sanctioned or registered event,
including official training at such events. This coverage also
includes training supervised or directed by a USSA member club
and/or USSA member coaches.
The Club has also chosen to purchase additional liability
insurance coverage for the Club. All usual and customary activities
of Club, including non-sanctioned events, on hill training, dryland
training and non-vehicular activities which are supervised by Club
staff and/or coaches are covered. There is an additional cost per
racer of $50 for this coverage. In order for the Club to obtain
coverage, all development program participants, racers, directors
and coaches must be members of USSA.
Medical Information & Release Form:
All racers must have this form on file prior to the beginning of
the season. Download the
Medical Information & Release Form
and
submit it with your payment.
Work Credits:
The success of the Labrador Mountain Ski Club depends upon the
active participation of members. This is a club, not a professional
service you purchase. Help is needed at Club hosted events and
participation gives you the opportunity to experience the thrill of
the sport in an up close and personal way. By becoming active, you
also become a part of the tradition of the Club by learning and
passing on your knowledge and skills to new parents, thus continuing
the cycle of keeping the Club strong and viable.
Each Junior Racing family is requested to work at races hosted by
the Club. As an added incentive, one credit of $25 is earned for
each adult working a race with a maximum of 3 credits or $75 per
family. At the end of the season, the credit can be refunded to you
or applied towards your next season's membership fees.
While parents of Flying Forerunners are not required to work, it
is recommended that you assist at Club events so that you can become
more familiar with the sport a can be ready to assist when your
young skier becomes a junior racer.
Clinics are held throughout the state to help parents become more
familiar with volunteering to work in a variety of positions at ski
races. Clinics are held by NYSSRA and, in our region, are sponsored
by the Central New York Ski Council. It's really easy to get
involved!
Club Fund Raising:
The only fund raising activity that Club members are required to
participate in is our annual raffle. Each family is responsible for
purchasing or selling of 10 tickets at $5.00 each.
Club Statistics:
During
the 2007-2008 season, the Club was made up of 37 family memberships,
with 85 young racers enrolled in the program. This included 59
licensed racers (Junior 5s through Junior 1s) and 26 young people
enrolled in our development program - the Flying Forerunners.
Our coaching staff of 29, which includes 7 alumni who teach
during Camps and throughout the season, can be expected to at least
put in a combined 220 days and 125 nights of practice time, and 130
race days coaching racers at junior development events in NY State
and throughout the east.
